If you are in the market for new carpet you have probably asked this question a few times.  What is the deal with carpet padding?  Why do you need it? Can’t you just use the old pad?

What is the purpose of carpet pad? Carpet padding helps promote the life of your carpet.   Proper carpet padding absorbs the weight of those who walk on it and keeps the pile from flattening and looking worn.  Carpet pad also protects the back of the carpet because without padding the carpet backing would rub against the floor with each step and then wear out from the bottom up. Carpet pad also makes walking on your carpet much more comfortable which is usually the most important feature to the homeowner.

Carpet padding also helps in the maintenance of your carpet.  Your vacuum cleaner works better with carpet pad as it promotes better air circulation by lifting the carpet.  Padding can also reduce noise and insulate your floors.

If the carpet you are replacing was not overly worn or destroyed by pets or moisture you may not always need to change your carpet pad however, most manufacturer warranties will be void without a new carpet pad.  Ideally when you purchase a new carpet you should purchase the recommended carpet pad to fulfill the warranty and increase the life of your carpet.

ProSource of Pinellas County sells not only beautiful carpet but an excellent selection of carpet pad to make your carpet feel more comfortable and extend its life.  Our Account Managers are always available to explain the differences in padding and what type you will need for your carpet.
