Ceramic Tile vs Porcelain Tile- What’s the deal?

Ceramic tile is a mixture of clays and other natural materials. The clays are mined from the earth, shaped, colored and then fired up in kilns. Traditional ceramic tile can be naturally colored and left unglazed like terra cotta, or they can be colored or have a design which can be glazed in a glossy or matte finish. Usually ceramic tile has either a white or red body coloration underneath the glazed colored top coating.

Porcelain tiles are made of finer clays and fired at much higher temperatures than ceramic tiles. This process makes porcelain tile denser, less porous, harder and less likely to have moisture and stain absorption than ceramic tiles. Many porcelain tiles are suitable for both indoor and outdoor uses. Porcelain tiles that are not glazed will have continuous color from the top to the bottom of the tile making it more resistant from scratching.  Glazed porcelain tiles do not always have continuous color throughout the tile but their maintenance is much easier.  Glazed porcelain can be manufactured to look like stone but has the benefit of being less porous than actual stone and often a better choice for flooring.

Choosing between porcelain and ceramic tile is often a choice between which flooring product you like more.  Both come in a variety of beautiful styles and offer limitless design choices for any type of application whether it is commercial or residential.  The timeless beauty of ceramic and porcelain tiles are always a show stopper.
